The MTV Video Music Awards returned with some of the biggest names in music vying for the fabled Moon Person statue.

Lil Nas X, Jack Harlow and Kendrick Lamar tied for leading nominees with seven apiece. While Harlow took home ‘Song of the Summer’, Lil Nas X landed 3 wins in technical categories and best collaboration.

Harlow and Lil Nas X’s collaboration ‘Industry Baby’ propelled their nominations and 3 wins. However, Bad Bunny emerged as the Artist Of The Year, beating the likes of Drake, Ed Sheeran, Harry Styles and Lizzo.

Harry Styles who received six nominations, won Album Of The Year for ‘Harry’s House’ and Best Pop for ‘As It Was’. Taylor Swift who was up for five nominations for the night took home three wins including Video of the Year for her track ‘All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version)’.

It was also a big night for K-Pop supergroup BLACKPINK who marked their first U.S. awards show appearance. The girls scorched the stage with their blazing new single ‘Pink Venom’ from their upcoming album ‘Born Pink’. Rose, Jennie, Jisoo and Lisa also took home the award for Best Metaverse Performance for their in-game concert in the video game PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. Additionally, band member Lisa made history as the first solo female K-pop star and Korean soloist to win a VMA, taking home the award for Best K-Pop for her debut solo single, ‘Lalisa’.

Nicki Minaj, also a big winner tonight, performed hits from throughout her career and accepted the show’s Video Vanguard award, which MTV has said she’s receiving for her artistry, barrier-breaking hip-hop and status as a global superstar. The honour is named after Michael Jackson.

Performers this year included Anitta, Bad Bunny, Eminem and Snoop Dogg, J Balvin, Jack Harlow, Kane Brown, Lizzo, Måneskin, Marshmello and Khalid, Nicki Minaj, Panic! at the Disco and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Harlow joined LL Cool J and Nicki Minaj as the show’s emcees.
